Well, the best bet is to buy a games console that is a bit older.
It will save some money, and will be cheaper to replace when your children inevitably break it.
I would recommend something like the Super Nintendo. It is very sturdy, and has lots of games available quite cheap via eBay.
As well as this, the games are a lot less violent than modern games, and are often easier to understand.
It may be tempting to buy the Nintendo Wii, but in my opinion the games are very boring, and unlikely to maintain your kids interest for very long.
Also, the hardware is quite fragile, and the discs scratch easily.
