Vitamin D cancer relationship is an epic battle, to be won no matter what.
Just about everyone knows about the relationship between vitamin D and the calcium absorption of your bones, but did you know about the strong connection between vitamin D and cancer?
When vitamin D is absorbed into your body, one of the things it does is to create the hormone calcitriol. This hormone has been found in many scientific studies to be able to kill off cancer cells both in vivo and in vitro.
This means if your baby is predisposed to cancer and you take enough vitamin D cancer cells in the fetus may disappear and be replaced with normal, healthy ones.
It also means that if you get enough vitamin D yourself, you may be able to prevent the development of cancerous tissue before it gets beyond being just a few cells.
In addition to the lab tests and group studies, statistics also help to back up this connection. Research has found that countries with a greater amount of sunlight actually have a lower percentage of cancer patients for many different types of cancer than do the countries classified as getting less sunlight.
This study was done in 2006 and used information from more than four million cancer patients in thirteen separate countries all around the world.
The basic results of this study were that the more sun you get, and thus the more vitamin D, the smaller your risk of developing cancer and the greater your chances of surviving it if you do develop it. That’s right, vitamin D actually helps prevent cancer.
Other studies have also shown that if people get at least 1100 IUs (international Units) a day of vitamin D, cancer risks reduced by 30% for developing breast and ovarian cancer, by 43% for pancreatic cancer and by a staggering 50% for developing colon cancer.
Studies have also shown that people who do develop cancer and get treatment for it have a higher percentage of survival chance if their treatment or surgery occurs during the summer months when there is sunlight available and their bodies can produce their own vitamin D.
Of course there is the risk of developing skin cancer from spending too much time out in the sun, but there are other ways to get vitamin D besides sunbathing all the time.
Pill based vitamin D supplements are easy to come by and easy to take. There is also vitamin D naturally occurring in many foods we eat such as eggs, beef liver and many kinds of fatty fish.
If you still wish to make your own vitamin D but do not want the uncontrolled environment of sunbathing, you can always opt to use a tanning bed in moderation.
With enough vitamin D cancer development rates can be significantly decreased for just about anyone, especially women at risk for developing breast cancer.
