The right moisturizer with sunscreen can be your skin’s best friend, according to the dermatologists. Before we answer why, have you ever thought about how important your skin is?
It protects the inner you by preventing water, heat and dirt from entering your systems. However, it is not as tough as it may seem.
Your skin needs protection too. The Ultraviolet rays of the sun are considered as your skin’s enemy. You must have guessed by now why a moisturizer with sunscreen can be your best friend.
Most products for the skin are designed to block Ultraviolet rays. However, there are two UV rays that one must be aware of.
The first is known as UVB rays which are what you need when you need a tan. This tanning ray is strongest during the summer and usually penetrates only in the top layer of the skin and is not as harmful as the next type of UV ray.
UVA is stronger than UVB as it can go through light clothing, office windows, and wind shields. The bad thing about this ray is that it penetrates through the first and second layer of the skin.
The more your skin is exposed to UVA, your skin becomes dry, wrinkled, spotted, and the worst effect is skin cancer.
Most moisturizer with sunscreen only protects you from UVB. What you need is a product that is labeled “broad spectrum”.
You also have to check that the formula boasts of at least SPF 15. Some dermatologist would recommend a minimum of SPF 30 due to the thinning ozone layer.
Now you don’t go applying a moisturizer with sunscreen that is labeled broad spectrum and SPF 30 as yet. What kind of sunscreen you use as a UV protection is very important.
There are chemical sunscreens and there are physical sunscreens. The former use chemicals that can absorb both UVA and UVB, the latter are called sun-blocks because they act as a barrier to block the entry of both UV Rays.
Physical sunscreens have more advantages compared to its counterpart because they are less likely to cause irritation and they do not break down over time. The best way of knowing which one is best for you can be determined by your dermatologist or your physician.
Once you know which moisturizer with sunscreen is perfect for you, knowing how to use it is another thing you should know. Knowing how much sunscreen you need is vital.
Of course this would depend on where you are going, what you will be doing, and how long will you be under the sun.
If you are going to stay under the sun for quite some time, applying an actual sunscreen instead of a moisturizer or makeup with sunscreen would be safer.
Remember that for your sunscreen to act as a sun protection agent, it needs about 20 minutes from the time it was applied. So be advised to apply your moisturizer with sunscreen 20 minutes before exposing yourself to the sun.
Reapply after every two hours even if the product you are using is labeled as “waterproof” or “all day formula”. Protect your skin from the sun and it will continue to protect you.
